About Amy Brier

Artists Statement & Bio

When I was a child growing up in Rhode Island, my father built me a wonderful playhouse, complete with Dutch doors and working windows. He created it in his basement workshop. When it was finished, I ran inside my new playhouse, full of anticipation, only to discover that the most important part was missing: there was no basement, no workshop like my father’s.

My parents were both creative people, and they shared with my siblings and me their love of making things, of learning to use tools and materials to their fullest expression. My career as a stonecarver and a sculptor has brought me around the world to learn how others make things, to teach my own methods, and to explore tradition and innovation in my craft. History and memory influence my work in classical references and forms. My work shares my sense of joy about the process of making art, about being a part of the natural world and of our collective history-in-the-making.
